What hard water does to a Joliet home

Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium. At 22 grains per gallon it is not a taste problem, it is a bill. Scale coats the inside of the water heater, crusts the faucet aerators, spots every glass in the dishwasher and leaves towels stiff. Skin and hair feel dry because soap never fully rinses.

In the Battelle Memorial Institute study of hard versus softened water, every water heater run on hard water failed before the test ended. Every heater on softened water finished. That is the difference between replacing a heater at eight years and at fifteen.

How the softener works

A salt-based softener passes your incoming water through a resin bed that swaps hardness minerals for sodium. When the resin fills up, the unit regenerates overnight with brine from the salt tank and flushes the minerals to the drain. You add salt. It does the rest.

We install it at the main line after the meter, so every tap, the water heater, the dishwasher and the washing machine all get softened water. Outdoor spigots can be left on hard water for the lawn.

Why we do not sell a softener alone

Joliet water has three separate problems and a softener solves one of them. It does nothing about the chloramine the city uses to disinfect, and nothing about radium, which the 2023 city report showed as high as 7.18 pCi/L against a legal limit of 5. So the bundle is three parts:

All three installed for $2,999. See how the reverse osmosis system works and what is actually in Joliet water.

Softeners on private wells

Well water around Joliet is often harder than city water and can carry iron and hydrogen sulfide. A softener handles low iron but not a lot of it. Bring a recent test, or get a hardness test for $18 at the Will County Health Department lab, and we size the equipment to what is in your well. Iron or sulfur treatment is quoted on top of the bundle.
